President Biden Faces Pressure from Top Democrats Amid COVID-19 Infection

President Joe Biden is confronting new questions about his candidacy for the November election, as his campaign events have been temporarily paused due to a COVID-19 infection. The top Democratic leaders in Congress, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have reportedly met with Biden individually to express concerns over his bid for the White House.
Additionally, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has privately told Biden that she believes he cannot defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election, according to CNN. Biden's re-election attempt was already facing growing dissent among prominent Democrats after his debate performance against Trump last month.


After announcing his positive COVID-19 test on Wednesday, the White House stated that the 81-year-old president is experiencing mild symptoms and will isolate at his Delaware home while continuing to fulfill his duties. Biden had been in Las Vegas earlier in the day, attempting to revive his support among Hispanic voters, a demographic where his poll numbers have slipped since 2020.

The president's COVID-19 diagnosis has led to the sudden cancellation of a planned speech, marking a debilitating setback to his efforts to ramp up his campaign activities. Biden has faced increasing calls in recent weeks for him to withdraw from the election race, with some Democrats concerned his presence at the top of the ticket could harm their chances of controlling Congress.


While the White House has pushed back on these reports, stating that Biden plans to win the nomination, the president has acknowledged that he would consider dropping out if any of his doctors advised him of a "medical condition" that would prevent him from serving. As Biden continues to recover from COVID-19, the pressure and uncertainty surrounding his political future remain.
