Google Unveils AI-Enhanced Android Update and New Pixel 9 Devices
While Google has historically seen modest profits from its hardware ventures, the introduction of new AI-driven features for Android might pave the way for increased revenue through subscriptions.
On Tuesday, Google rolled out innovative AI functionalities for Android devices, marking a significant shift in integrating its Gemini AI assistant. This launch underscores Google's strategy to showcase its AI capabilities ahead of Apple's anticipated rollout later this year.
Despite the modest financial returns from its hardware division, Google is betting on the latest Android enhancements to boost income through its Gemini AI subscription model.
In a Tuesday blog post, Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samat shared, "We've entirely revamped the assistant experience with Gemini, allowing for natural conversations as if with another person. It grasps your intent, tracks your thought process, and executes intricate tasks."

Samat stated that users can summon Gemini's overlay today while using other apps to inquire about the content of their screens. This feature will be accessible across hundreds of phone models from various manufacturers.
Although Android previously featured some AI capabilities, this year marks a pivotal shift as Google emphasizes its new AI-powered functions driven by a robust language model integrated into devices.
One illustration provided by Google included a scenario where a user uploads a concert list photo and queries Gemini to check their calendar. If there's availability, Gemini proposes setting a reminder to review ticket prices that evening.
Gemini's abilities extend to utilizing information from Google apps, such as crafting a daily workout plan from a personal trainer's email or drafting a professional bio using a resume stored in Google Drive.
Furthermore, users might request Gemini to compose an email and attach an image of a space-themed cake or ask questions about YouTube video content.
This AI assistant can also interact with apps like Maps, Flights, and Gmail. Google is working on integrating support for third-party extensions, hinting that developers might eventually incorporate Gemini features into their applications.

Gemini offers various voice options, and the "Live" feature, introduced at Google's May developer conference, allows for more human-like interactions. Initially available for select devices and subscribers to Google's Gemini Advanced program at $19.99 monthly, "Live" is expected to enhance user experience.
In contrast, Apple has announced its forthcoming AI initiative, Apple Intelligence, which can recognize contextually important notifications, execute cross-app tasks, and leverage OpenAI's ChatGPT for writing and image creation. This system is still under development and is anticipated to launch next year, with some initial features arriving this fall alongside new iPhones.
New Pixel 9 Phones and Pixel Watch 3
Google has also introduced its latest Pixel lineup, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, all featuring Gemini AI. The Pixel 9 series boasts an enhanced camera and a screen that's 35% brighter for improved visibility in direct sunlight. It is powered by Google's latest Tensor G4 processor and equipped with 16GB of RAM, which is crucial for AI functionality. Higher RAM is essential for running AI processes effectively within smartphones, unlike older iPhones, which have less memory and thus have limited AI capabilities.
The Pixel 9 starts at $799, reflecting a $100 increase from its predecessor, though this rise aligns with the overall trend of increasing smartphone prices. The Pixel 9 Pro, which includes a complimentary year of "Gemini Advanced" subscription, is priced at $999, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL starts at $1,099. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is available for $1,799.

New functionalities include workout planning, recovery insights, and AI-powered exercise recommendations. The Pixel Watch 3 integrates seamlessly with Google's ecosystem, providing access to Nest camera feeds, the Google TV remote, offline Google Maps, and more. It offers up to 24 hours of battery life, extending to 36 hours with Battery Saver mode.
